Bags Entertainment was proud to present WEST SIDE STORY at Teatro Regio, Turin; by Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim, this is the musical which revolutionised music. This production is the only one which features Robbins' original choreography and direction, and the Regio theatre was the only Italian stop on the tour which brought the show to the major cities in Europe.
A love story but also an action thriller, West Side Story is about the doomed love between two youngsters, Tony and Maria, whose happiness is destroyed by the hatred between the two rival gangs they belong to: the Jets and the Sharks; it is set in the urban jungle of 1950s New York City. The musical gained further success when the big-screen version of the same name picked up 10 Oscars, 3 Golden Globes and a Grammy Award for the soundtrack. An adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Bernstein's masterpiece combines powerful mambo and samba rhythms with charming melodies which have entered the collective consciousness, such as Maria, Tonight, America and Somewhere.
Leonard Bernstein, the great conductor and composer, was able to find the right balance between popular language and refined style, creating this masterpiece which bridges genres and -generations.
